オーストラリアの街～Sydney (NSW)～

（ここでは、Sydney市街地だけを紹介させていただきます）

Sydney（日本語表記：シドニー）は、
言わずと知れた、オーストラリア最大の都市かつ経済の中心地です。
とある情報筋によると（→ん？）、
シドニーの市街地だけでも人口は450万人ほど。
Mercer Human Resource Consultingによる、2010年度の「世界で最も住みやすい都市ランキング」では、
シドニーは10位（ちなみに、１位はウィーン、日本は東京が40位）にランクインしました。
でも、納得です。
海の見える街！！！
これだけでもすごく魅力的。
しかも、その海が透き通ったブルーで、青空と一体になり、
その中でたたずむオペラハウスは、
昼間は周りの青さと建物の白さが爽やかで、
夜は暗くなった空に浮かぶような幻想的な景色は、
何度見ても素敵です。
ちなみに、シドニーに面するシドニー湾（Sydney Harbour/Port Jackson Bay）は、
リアス式海岸と言われています。

シドニー市街地に住んでいる友達によると、
車を持っていない人にはすごく便利だとのこと。
衣食住すべて足りているような印象がありますが、
ちょっとした買い物ならともかく、
いろいろ細かいものを、となると、電車かバスが必要になります。
高層マンションが多く、
ルームシェアもわりと情報が多く出ているので、
ファミリーだけではなく、
留学生やワーキングホリデーで滞在している人にも
住居を探すのにはシドニー市街地は便利だと思います。
ただ、家賃は高そうです。

私見による、シドニー市街の満足度は、
100点中80点です。
やっぱり、利便性という意味では圧倒的に群を抜いていると思います。
それよりも、シドニー市街地の最大の魅力は、
都会の喧騒を味わうことができる（？）と同時に
（注：東京には勝てません。オーストラリア国内で、という意味です）
海に徒歩圏内、
さらに高い高層ビルが並ぶ市街地の道路１本隔てた場所には、
ハイドパーク（Hyde Park）やロイヤルボタニックガーデン（Royal Botanical Garden）があり、
自然が身近だという点です。
都市にも緑と青さがあふれています。

ただ、治安は都会だけあって、
ほかに比べるとちょっと悪いかな。
金曜日の夜は酔っ払い多いし。。。
マンションの下層階に住んでいた友達によると、
夜遅くになると、叫び声が聞こえることがしばしばだったとか。
観光客も多いですしね。
事件が起こるのも多くなるわけです。。。

観光客と言えば、
シドニー市街地自体は小さな街ですが、
いくつか有名な観光名所があります。

・ハーバーブリッジ (Harbour Bridge)
・オペラハウス (Opera House)
・シドニータワー (Sydney Tower)
・ロイヤルボタニックガーデン (Royal Botanic Garden)
・クイーンビクトリアビルディング (Queen Victoria Building) etc.

とりあえず、Central駅あたりからGeorge streetを北に向かって歩いて行くと（約30～40分）（時間がなければ無料バス・緑色の555バスを使うと便利です）、
シドニーの街の雰囲気がなんとなくわかると思います。
市街地自体は、意外とコンパクトです。

ここまで書いて言うのも何ですが、
Sydneyというと、一体どこまでを指すのか、実はよくわかっていないです。
行政上のくくりでは定義があるのでしょうけれど、
実際に生活していると、「シドニー」っていうと、かなり広くなってしまうので、
ここでは、本当にシドニー市街地のみを紹介させていただきました（ロックス：The Rocks、ダーリングハーバー：Darling Harbour、サリーヒルズ：Surry Hillsなどの周辺地域は除いています）。

（Let me write about Sydney, the metropolitan area only）

Sydney is the most populous and biggest city in Australia.
According to the information (?), population of the metropolitan area is about 4.5 million.
The most livable cities in the world researched by Mercer Human Resource Consulting tells that Sydney ranks the 10th (Vienna comes in the first, and Tokyo in the 40th according to the survey in 2010).

The city that overlook the sea!!!!
This only is very attractive.
Besides the water is transparent blue, as if you can’t see the border between the blue skies.
During the day, the Opera House looks bracing (?) with the combination of its whiteness and the blue sky in the back, and during the night, it looks very　mystical as if it floats in the dark sky.
It was very attractive whenever I saw.
Sydney Harbour--this is also called Port Jackson Bay—is deeply indented coastline.

My friend who used to live in the city centre said that it is very convenient for those who don’t have a car.
The city life strikes me that you can get everything, clothing, food, and housing.
However, you need to take trains or buses if you want to buy something special.
There are many high-rise apartments in the city and there is lots of information about room sharing.
So the city centre is very convenient for anyone to find a place to live in, regardless of family, international students, or people on working holiday visa.
However, rent looks quite expensive.

My satisfaction barometer of Sydney Metropolitan area is 80 out of 100.
When it comes to convenience, it is superior to anything.
Beyond that the biggest attraction of the Metropolitan area is that you can enjoy the noise of the city (note: Tokyo is more than that in both good and bad ways. I mean Sydney is the biggest city within Australia) and at the same time, you can also enjoy nature.
You can walk to the beach within walking distance.
One street off the city centre, you encounter Hyde Park and Royal Botanical Garden.
Nature is next to you even in the city centre.
This city is also full of nature, green trees and blue water.

Having said that, there are some negative points.
Compared to other cities, it is a little bit less safe.
Especially, on Friday night, there are heaps of drunken people on the street….
My friends, who used to live in a lower part of an apartment building, said that they often heard shouts and screams late at night.
Besides there are many tourists in the city.

Speaking of tourists, the Metropolitan area itself is small, but it has several famous tourist spots.

・Harbour Bridge
・Opera House
・Sydney Tower
・Royal Botanic Garden
・Queen Victoria Building, etc.

If you don’t have time to see around the city, walk from Central Station towards the north on George Street (about 30-40minutes) (take free bus, “555” if you don’t have time).
You will see a little what Sydney is like.

Well, I have been writing up to here, but actually, I don’t know exactly which part is called “Sydney Metropolitan area”.
I think there is an official definition, but when you live around the city, usually “Sydney” includes many places. Here I introduced the city centre only (excluding The Rocks, Daring Harbour, Surry Hills, etc.)
