Carving and Me~

====================

I used to write poem, compose music, write essays, and knit, etc.
So I have involved in some sort of “creating something.”
However, I had never imagine myself indulged in this artistic work; soap carving.
I started it only 3 months ago, but I am really into it.
Soap carving is now beyond my hobby.

By the way I always make it a rule to name each work (except for ones I couldn’t make well; failure. Failure is named “work going to the bathroom”) in order not to forget what I made.
It is half true, but the other half is because I would like to give meaning to each work.
I always carve soaps with all my heart and soul.
I would like to leave my thought at the time I carve on soap.

I am wondering how many works I will make in a year.
I have no idea what I can and I will carve….look forward to it!!

My work 9 ~ Heart and Soul 1~

Facebook

(Angel's ladder)

“Purity”

For the last several months, there had been lots of sad/irritating/depressing things happening to me and I almost lost myself.

The other day I happened to see “tenshi no hashigo”, meaning “angel’s ladder.”
And so I shared the photo (above) on Facebook.
I had some wonderful chats with friends on Facebook about angels and purity, which was rewarding and fun!

I always want to leave myself with purity how matter old I am, but I doubt I am as much pure as I was a kid.

However, when I knew the small technique that I could use a filter to look at things, I guess I might have lost “pure” purity.

This is the photo of “Tenshi no hashigo; meaning “Angel’s ladder”.
It can be seen only around sunrise/sunset when the altitude of sun is low.
However, I think I have more opportunities to see it this year.

Well, it is Valentine’s Day.
I carved this flower, wishing that I will care about my precious friends and family with pure heart.
Even if I have filters to see thing/unanimated stuff, I hope I can stay pure and unfiltered towards people.

I used a round soap for this flower (I don’t know the name of this flower, but just let me call it “purity”)
I put a bead in the middle.
One carving knife and 2 gravers were used.
It took me 2 hours or less.

Happy Valentines Day!

My work 8 ~Leaves~

====================

“Spring In Your Heart”

This is the first difficulty that people would face after starting carving, but at the same time, this work has lots of technique that you have to go through.

Two different kinds of leaves (patterns) are carved on.
In order to make it look stereoscopic, daring yet fine techniques are introduced.
I forgot the name of the techniques, but one leaf has 4 kinds of techniques.
One knife is used and it took me about 2 hours.
As I carve more soaps, it should take me less time, but I began to feel awkward caring small and fine stuff.

I named this work “心春(Miharu)”, meaning “(flowers) waiting for spring to come (in their mind); spring in your heart.”
It is the coldest time of year in Japan.
However, everyone has been waiting (in their mind) for spring to come that is surely approaching.
Everyone….animals or insects under the ground, trees and leaves that have been enduring coldness without their clothes, and of course, we human being.
I tried to express that feeling in the leaves.

How I Met Carving~

====================

My mother is very good at using knives.
She decorates plates by cutting fruits and vegetables beautifully and welcomes guests at home.
When I was at secondary school, I brought a box lunch (“o bentou”) every day that my mother cooked.
Her arrangements of food were so beautiful that my box lunch was very popular among classmates.
Sometimes friends in a different classroom came over just to have a look at my lunch.
I was so proud of it 

I had been hoping that one day I would be able to do that as my mother does.
However, until recently when I saw an ad about fruits and soap carving class, it is the art created in Thailand (my mother did not know it either.).

Well, for the half a year, I had opportunities to see artistic works, I probably had an admiration for art, subconsciously.
Actually, I did not have any idea at all before that I would be interested in foreign art and work on it.

As soon as I saw the ad, I applied for the class.

I try to collect information on the Internet, but info on carving does not seem to exist as much as aromatherapy either in English and Japanese.

However, carving class is quite popular in Japan, and classes tend to get nearly full before the start of classes.
I met some people in classes, and most of them keep carving for a long time.
And many of my “classmates” are those who have got more time after childrearing, those who started it as their hobby after retirement.
Unexpectedly, I am rather young among them (lol).
Because of that (I am relatively young), my teacher recommends that I should aim at becoming an instructor, and I have been doing it with passion.

About 2 months have passed.
About 1.5 years until I become an instructor.

My husband wonders what million of soap I will waste until then….

All told, I have been absorbed in soap carving and do not have time for playing keyboards/guitar anymore.

My work 7 ~A Dragon Returns~

“A Leaping Dragon”

A happy new year to those who are celebrating Chinese new year!

Previously, I carved dragons named “彩龍 (sairyuu)”, but actually, I wanted to make it “翔龍 (shouryuu)” for praying this year to take a leap forward.
However, after carving them, my works looked like “a dragon walking”, or “a relatively big snake”, or, perhaps “a crocodile that does not move,” and no one could see it as a significant leap forward.

Therefore, this time, I tried to carve a dragon that look leaps and bounces (even if it does not look like it, at least I tried.)

Well, it is still a quiet one (I mean “unanimated”).
I truly wanted to create a dragon that looks cooler with dignity but also with a bit of impression of fear.
But I guess it looks (slightly) like moving upward (flying to the sky), does not it?
Just in case, again, I carved “龍 (dragon)” next to it so that people can see it as a dragon.

From design to completion, it took me more or less 3 hours.
It was unexpectedly difficult.
There is A LOT to improve.
I used 1 knife and 1 graver.
The name of this work: “翔龍”, meaning (hoping) a dragon that jump beyond (I mean it in a good way).

I hope you like it!
