My work 12 ~ Dahlia~

====================

“A Flower in Love”
This carving is one of the most popular reliefs among soap carving artworks.
The flower has its Japanese name, called “天竺牡丹 (Tenjiku botan)”, but I think “dahlia” is more popular.

In fact, I carved this two months after I started carving, which means I did in the middle of winter although it is a summer flower!
And this is my fifth work.
However, this carving experience made me cheer up (I do not like winter.)

Dahlia is easy to have genetic mutations, therefore, there are way too various kinds of shapes and colours. Guess what!
Dahlia has more than 30,000 varieties!
Thanks to this fact, we can carve lots of kinds of dahlia!

Dahlia is a Mexico’s national flower.
The flower language is “elegant and pomp.”

One knife was used for this work.
It took me about 2.5 hours.

Choosing soaps~

==================== It is essential to choose a good soap for carving. We can carve on any kind of soap (I believe), but in order to make good one, we have to be careful in choosing the material. Even an expensive soap can get dry quite fast, or easily crack while we are making works. It seems to be the best to use Thai soap (especially designed for carving), which is the cradle land of this art. (but the number of soap to import is limited, and postage seems much more expensive than the material itself lol) I am now interested in creating soaps from scratch too. I hope, in the future, I will be able to carve on my own soaps.

My work 11 ~ Cherry Blossoms~

“Departure”

It is March 11th.
For Japan, it is a special day….

We tend to think that we have another day, and put things off even though we have an end to our lives.
And I reckon that many of us thought the same way on that day too.

Today a year ago.
At 2:46 pm, a wide area from the Tohoku to Kanto, about 500 km long (200 km sideways) a magnificent were hit by a massive earthquake (magnitude 9.0).
This is considered as the biggest earthquake in recorded history in Japan, and the 4th biggest in the world (since 1990.)
This devastating earthquake killed 15,854 people and 3,155 people are said to be still missing. In addition, there are 343,935 people who lost their houses or are forced to lead the lives of refugees all over Japan.
During the past year, we have been experiencing about 600 aftershocks of more than magnitude 5.

On that day I had a day off and stayed at home.
I had a dream of a massive earthquake a night before, and when I had look at the clock at 2:40 pm, I had a strange hunch that the lift of the flat would stop in 10 minutes.
So I went out straight away and experienced the earthquake on the ground.
I had the dream and had the hunch, so I did not get surprised, which is a bit weird.
I stood surrounded by super high-rise buildings, so I thought I could not survive.
I just waited for the quake to stop, while I was looking up to the dark sky and listening to earth rumbling.
A stranger passing by kindly spoke to me and took me to a safer place.
However, it seemed to me quite a long time before he came to me.

Soon after that, the lift actually stopped, and traffic lights were all gone, and water supply also stopped…
I could not understand what happened to us.

I walked up to my room (about 60m above the ground), and prepared myself to evacuate.
I could not get in touch with anyone (because the line was too busy.)
The building never stopped swinging due to the aftershocks (I live in a high-rise building, so it swings really hard!).
The sun slowly went down with natural lights disappearing.
I was fighting with loneliness, sadness, and confusion, while I was alone (I think I was alone on the floor too for a while.)
I do not know how I can put it into words, but I still remember very clearly how I felt at that time.

In 6 hours, when the electricity and water supplies recovered, my room looked different to me.
I turned TV on, and finally knew what happened.
I could not stop crying because of being free from fears and appreciation that I survived.

Not to mention the quake itself, the footage of tsunami was just like the world of “hell.”
I could hardly believe that it actually was happening in Japan.
Even now while I am writing this, I shudder with horror.

My husband could not come back home, so he stayed at the office all night.
Thanks to the Internet, I got in touch with friends and family, and I spent whole night chatting with my friend to escape from fear.

I received many emails of inquiry of my safety from the western part of Japan and overseas too.
I really appreciate, my friends!

I did nothing but fund-raising.
I would like to go to the Tohoku area to help in some way, but I am not sure what I can do for them.
It could end up as mere gratification of the ego.

Here is a memorable line by a girl who experienced the Great Hanshin Earthquake in 1995.
“I was glad that we received a lot of supports from all over Japan and overseas and encouraged very much, but in certain time people will forget about what we have gone through. The most wanted thing for us is to be remembered.”
I am not sure what I can do by remembering it, but I think I can pray and pass it onto people all over the world or to the next generation.

We live in Japan which is one of well-known countries for earthquake. So it is our destiny to experience it however big it is.
It is also true that earthquakes generated the land of Japan.
What we can do now and in the future is remembering the victims of the disaster and handing down from generation to generation.
We also need continue supporting the affected people in some ways.
And, we must prepare ourselves for the extreme situations.

All of my friends were safe, but some of them lost their houses due to tsunami.
I am afraid but I will never know the sadness even if I try to.
However, they strengthen themselves out and look ahead for recovery.

This year let me pray with carving in addition to fund-raising.
I tried to carve cherry blossoms in FULL bloom.

To my friends from Tohoku,
And people in Tohoku,
I do hope that all of your hearts will become full bloom in the very near future.
I believe that people can take a big leap with wings even if they get hurt.

I also wrote about a short article on cherry blossoms.
Here is the link.

One knife was used for this work.
It took me about 2.5 hours.

====================

I carved cherry blossoms on a soap, so I would like to share something about cherry blossoms with you.

Cherry blossom is our national flower as well as chrysanthemum.

The season of cherry blossoms starts in Okinawa, the south island of Japan, in late February and move northwards, which is called the “cherry blossom front.”

In Tokyo it is in its full bloom between late March and early April.
It is usually a month later that the front reaches Hokkaido, the north island of Japan.
A travel of cherry blossoms from the south to the north is about 2 months.
It is said that it blooms when the top temperature is about 14-15 C and low temperature is about 5 C.

For us Japanese, cherry blossom is one of the most important and impressive flowers because it comes out when we have graduation/entrance ceremonies.
It represents our departure of life.

The image of “Japan = cherry blossom” seems to be familiar with some people overseas too.
Around this time of year many people visit us from overseas to view cherry blossoms.
I have some friends who also would like to come to Japan in spring for the flower.

So how come it is so popular!?!?

First of all, you can see cherry blossoms all over Japan in spring even though the kind is a bit different.
However, the life of the flower is so short (only a week from starting to bloom to its best) and dissipates slowly as if it floats in the air like dancing….
Such a vanity makes it even popular, I guess.

I learned a bit about cherry blossoms.

The flower blooms all over the tree, which makes it look gorgeous and has a presence.
In addition, the flower comes out before leaves appear, which is not common for a plant.

Also, it depends on the species, but for example, “Someiyoshino”, the most popular one in Japan, is considered to have the colour (pinkish white or whitish pink?) that produces the atmosphere and feeling of spring and tranquility.

The flower language is “A beautiful and intelligent woman.”
I wish I would like to be one :)

♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪

In Japan there are heaps of aroma-related products, majority of which are diffusers.
You can see them everywhere at interior decor section at shops.

I found this, “aroma necklace.”
You can put your favourite oil into the small container.

It smells fairly well.
It is nice to be with your favourite scent all the time.
I think it works better than diffusers.

However, people around you might notice the scent.
Also, the container is transparent, so if you put the oil whose colour is yellow, people might think that it is….

My work 10 ~ Lotus~

“Sacred Heart”

This is one of the most popular soap carving works, a lotus.
The flower language of lotuses is “eloquence”, “rest”, “pure heart”, and “love going away”.

Lotus is closely connected with Buddhism consciousness and art, and often found on Buddha statues.
It is said that a lotus is the flower bloomed by the first footsteps of Buddha when he was born (does my English make sense?)
And Buddha stood on the lotus and said “Each of us is all valuable.”
In India I heard that the shape of a lotus represents heaven.
Also in ancient Egypt a lotus is considered a sacred flower and you can see it as a motif in unearthed articles from the graveyard of Tut Ankh Amon.
In addition, some southeastern Asian countries have a lotus as its national flower.

I learn about flowers little by little through aromatherapy and soap carving.

This lotus is carved on a soap made in Thailand (!!! Yay!!!).
It is so expensive (mostly transportation fee lol) to buy Thai soaps in Japan, but it is really easy and unbelievably comfortable carving on.

Thanks to the soap with glaze (gloss), you can see how beautiful my work is! (LOL)

I used one knife, and it took me about 2 hours to complete.

P.S. I am not sure if my English makes sense…
